What to See in Rijeka by Boat
Arriving in Rijeka by sea gives you a completely different perspective of Croatia's third-largest city. As your speedboat approaches the harbour, the dramatic coastline and Austro-Hungarian architecture unfold before you — a view that no road trip can match.
The famous Korzo promenade stretches along the waterfront, lined with elegant facades, cafés and shops. From the harbour, it's a short walk to Rijeka's vibrant fish market (Ribarnica), housed in an elegant Art Nouveau building and considered one of the finest on the Adriatic. The narrow streets of the old town lead past the iconic yellow City Tower (Gradski Toranj), the Roman Arch, and St. Vitus Cathedral — all within easy walking distance.
For panoramic views, Trsat Fortress sits on a hilltop 138 metres above sea level, overlooking the entire Kvarner Bay. The 13th-century castle offers a 360-degree panorama stretching from Učka mountain to the islands of Cres and Krk. Trsat is also home to the Church of Our Lady of Trsat, one of Croatia's oldest pilgrimage sites.
The Fiumara district blends industrial heritage with modern culture. You'll find the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Maritime & History Museum telling Rijeka's 3,000-year story with the sea, and the quirky Peek & Poke computer museum — one of Europe's most unusual — housed in the old town.

Trip Details from Opatija
Departure from our base in Ičići, the boat ride takes just 15–20 minutes by speedboat. We recommend a half-day trip of 4–5 hours, which gives you plenty of time to explore the city centre, enjoy lunch at a waterfront konoba, and combine the return trip with swimming stops at hidden bays along the Opatija Riviera.
The ideal itinerary: depart Ičići in the morning, dock at Rijeka city marina and walk to Korzo in 5 minutes. Spend 2–3 hours exploring — the fish market, City Tower, optionally the climb to Trsat Fortress. Grab lunch with fresh Kvarner scampi and local šurlice pasta at a harbour-side restaurant. After lunch, cruise back to Ičići with an optional swimming stop along the way.
For food lovers, Rijeka's restaurants serve some of the finest seafood on the coast, often at lower prices than tourist-heavy Opatija. The city is a refreshing contrast to the resort atmosphere of the Riviera — perfect for travellers who want culture, history and authentic Croatian life alongside their time on the water.
